Who We Are

Neighbors Organizing for a Better Brownsville

We are not a political party, a PAC, or a special interest group. We are Brownsville residents — renters and homeowners, parents and teachers, workers and retirees — who believe that local government must answer to the people it serves.

Our Story

Brownsville Citizens United was founded in the belief that civic participation is not a luxury — it is a necessity. For too long, consequential decisions about our city have been made behind closed doors, under time pressure, and without the public scrutiny that residents deserve.

The organization grew out of conversations between neighbors who were frustrated by the gap between what Brownsville could be and what its government was delivering. We saw a city with enormous potential — a young population, a growing economy, a proud history — and a civic culture that too often left ordinary residents out of the room where decisions were made.

The Project Quantum vote in August 2026 crystallized what we had long suspected: that the City Commission was capable of making irreversible decisions affecting hundreds of acres of Brownsville's land and jurisdiction in just eight days, without independent review, without adequate public notice, and without the transparency that residents have a right to expect.

That vote did not create Brownsville Citizens United. But it made clear why organizations like ours are necessary — and why the work of civic accountability cannot wait.

Our Mission

To organize Brownsville residents around the principles of transparency, accountability, and community-driven governance — and to ensure that every major decision affecting our city is made in the open, with adequate public input, and in the genuine interest of the people of Brownsville.

Accountability

Elected officials must answer to the residents who put them in office. We hold them to that standard — through public pressure, documentation, and the democratic tools available to us.

Transparency

Government decisions should be made in the open. We publish documents, timelines, and facts so that every resident can evaluate what their government is doing and why.

Community First

Brownsville's future belongs to its residents — not to outside corporations, not to political insiders, and not to whoever can apply the most pressure in the shortest time.

Evidence Over Rhetoric

We make our case with facts, documents, and verifiable records. No rumors, no fabricated claims, no personal attacks. The truth is powerful enough on its own.

Nonpartisan

Accountability is not a partisan issue. We do not endorse candidates or parties. We evaluate elected officials by their actions and their willingness to serve the public interest.

Inclusive

Brownsville is a diverse community. Our organization reflects that diversity and is committed to ensuring that every resident — regardless of background — has a voice in the decisions that shape this city.

How We Work

Document Everything

We gather public records, meeting minutes, financial agreements, and official statements. We publish them so residents can see exactly what their government has done.

Organize Residents

We build networks of engaged residents across Brownsville's neighborhoods — people who show up, speak out, and hold their elected officials accountable.

Amplify Community Voices

We create platforms for residents to share their experiences and concerns, and we make sure those voices reach the people in power.

Use Democratic Tools

From public comment periods to recall petitions, we use every legitimate democratic mechanism available to ensure that residents — not corporations — have the final word.

This Is Your Organization

Brownsville Citizens United has no permanent staff, no corporate donors, and no political agenda beyond accountability and transparency. We are sustained entirely by residents who give their time, their energy, and their voices to the work of making Brownsville better. If you believe in what we stand for, we want you with us.
